How We Know We Are Succeeding

Assessing Student Progress

Student progress at Mother St. Bride School is measured by many of the elements of alternate and authentic assessments.

It involves "tasks and situations in which the student is given opportunities to demonstrate his/her understanding and to thoughtfully apply knowledge, skills, and habits of mind" (Marzano et al. 1993, 13). Although paper-and-pencil tests continue to play an important role, the use of alternate assessments such as projects, performances, observations, portfolios, learning logs, and journals are prevalent through all programs.

The EQAO conducts a provincial review each year of Reading, Writing, and Mathematics for all grade 3 and 6 students. The purpose of this assessment is to provide information on student achievement to parents, schools, boards and province.

In both 2010 and 2011 Mother St. Bride was recognized as a School of Distinction in the category of Improvement in Academics, by the Fraser Institute and was  presented with the Garfield Westin Award.

Plans For The Future

Mother St. Bride School continues to foster an environment that calls upon the staff, students, parents, parish and community to collaborate in the belief that "all are called to service in Christ".

The staff put in place many initiatives last year which will continue this year. More resources and technology were purchased to compliment all curricula. Though the support of the staff the school has developed a Professional Learning Community  that support our focus on collaborative planning and teaching. The teachers meet as divisions and develop BIG IDEA approaches to curriculum across each division. Focus will continue to be on assessment strategies and tracking procedures and to provide accommodations and modifications for students with special needs.  Assessment for, as and of learning and supporting our students in goal setting and next steps will continue to be an integral part of our assessment strategies.

Staff members continue to take advantage of various workshops sponsored by the Ministry of Education, board, Nipissing Faculty of Education, and various publishers.
